Abstract:What is spectral theory? What is the importance of eigenvalues and resonances in applied problems? How do we localize them, compute them, and how do we estimate their number? We will give an introduction to these questions and their answers, while providing numerous examples, including “large” size problems (from violin strings to aircrafts and skyscrapers) to the “smallest” size problems (e.g., atoms and molecules).
